Reserve Corps Recruitment
The LAPD Reserve Program is designed to attract applicants
from all segments of the community. Reserve officers wear
the same uniforms as full-time police officers and are
effective spokespersons in their neighborhoods for the
support of law enforcement. Their presence in the Department
provides full-time officers with an insight into all
segments of the City’s population. Reserve officers donate
thousands of hours of service each year. Because of the
standards, the selection process, and the training for
reserve officers, their acceptance by full-time officers is
very favorable and some patrol officers even request to work
with a particular reserve. Reserve officers have received
numerous commendations for their actions in the field.
Our goal is to recruit 100 new Reserve Police Officers this
calendar year. We are in the process of implementing several
initiatives to recruit for the Reserve Corps, such as
recruiting from the Explorer Programs throughout the City,
Police Academy Magnet Schools, collegiate academies,
universities, and colleges. Outreach is also being directed
to major corporations and professional associations such as
Indy Mac Bank and the State Bar Association.
Recruitment Section is working in partnership with Rotary
Clubs and Chambers of Commerce in the greater Los Angeles
area to promote the Reserve Corps. We are placing ads in
local professional magazines and publications are being used
to generate interest in the Reserve Corps.
We are currently accepting applicants from other Reserve
Police Academies, as well as lateral Reserve Officers from
other agencies.
Enhancing and updating the Reserve Corps recruitment efforts
will aid in meeting the Department’s goal of 100 new Reserve
Officers. The increase we are looking for will result in
more officers being deployed into the streets and will
provide an opportunity for community members to actively
contribute to improving the quality of life within the City
of Los Angeles.
Recruitment Section’s role has expanded not only to
recruiting new full-time police officers, but also to
include recruitment efforts for the Reserve Corps.
Orientations are conducted the first and third Thursday of
each month at 7:00 p.m. in the City Personnel Building, 700
E. Temple Street, Los Angeles. We are encouraging all
interested candidates to attend these orientations to gain
more insight into the Reserve Corps.
The Department has modified the Reserve Corps to comply with
the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and
Training (POST) guidelines and has classified all Sworn
Reserve Officers as Level III, Level II or Level I. The
level designation is indicative of the duties that the
Reserve Officer is authorized to perform. The duties range
from administrative (Level III) to enforcement (Level II and
I).
You are encouraged to recruit friends, relatives or any
individuals you believe would make excellent candidates for
the Reserve Corps. Should you have any questions or
concerns, please call Los Angeles Police Department's,
